Super Camp Paiol

Eight students from year 4 and two students from year 3 and Maple Bear Niterói year 4 through year 9 went to camp Paiol Grande in São Paulo. We went to Paiol to have fun and meet new friends.

We did a lot of fun activities including: crawled through the mud, slacklined over the river, completed a obstacle course and played a game called Medusa that was like treasure hunt at night.

We went a waterfall that was freezing cold water, it took us 45 minutes hiking to get there!

We completed a treasure hunt in 6 different groups and when we found the treasure it was a Paiol T-shirt.

Amazing Presentation About Canada

Jim was here to present to us about Canada. We saw the presentation and we had a lot of questions. We listened to famous Canadian music and we saw a ‘pow-wow’ festival (it is a festival that is celebrated by aboriginal people or First Nations of Canada).  We saw Canada’s Womens and Mens hockey team win the gold metal from Vancouver 2010. WOO HOO !!  We did this to learn more about Canada.

The Incredible Olympic Games Rio 2016

We are so excited for the Olympics that will start next week in Rio. The opening ceremony will be on the 5th of August in Maracanã. We did an activity in our Portuguese class. It was a timeline of all the Modern Olympic games from Athens 1896 until Rio 2016. All the places were divided among year 4 students each of us did 1,2 or 3 places.  We made powerpoints, posters or papers about each Olympics. We did this because the olympics are close and we know a lot of things about past Olympics.

Have you even made an Olympics timeline? Do you have a favourite Olympics? Tell us all about it in the comments?

Our Emily Carr Inspired Drawings

Last Thursday we started our special art project in class. All year 4 students made it. First we all chose a picture of a Canadian landscape. Then using pencil we drew the landscape with lots of details. Then some of us coloured our landscapes. Some of us did not colour because they had so many details in their drawing. We made these pictures to prepare for the knowledge fair on Saturday. The knowledge fair is a presentation about an artist that we try to imitate and display.  Our artist is Emily Carr. Emily Carr is a Canadian artist who paints aboriginal themed and landscapes paintings.

How you even drawn a lanscape? Which landscape did you draw? Tell us in the comments!

Judo in the Olympics

Judo in the Olympics will start August 6th and finish on the 12th. It will be a lot of fun! Judo in the Olympics will be held at Arena Carioca 2. Sadly none of us have tickets 😦

Judokas is the word for Judo fighters.  Judokas in the Olympics will come for all around the world to compete.  Judo is a healthy sport that is used for: protection from accidents and self-defense.

Some of year 4 students practice judo every week at school. It is cool, healthy and in the olympcs.

If you are going to the olympics what events will you see? We hope someone will get to see the judo events and tell us all about it! Tell us about your plans in the comments.

Our Special Volleyball and Basketball Player Visit

Yesterday after the assembly in the court yard at school we had two very special guests Camilinha Saldanha and Nicolas Pairone. Camilinha is a volleyball player and Nicolas plays basketball. Camilinha talked about her early experience playing volleyball and her passion for playing. She also showed us some of her metals. Nicolas talked about basketball! His experience playing with some NBA players and his team in Italy. We were lucky enough to have this visit because the Olympics are coming!! Rio 2016 starts next week and world class athletes are arriving everyday!

On Friday July 15th at 7:45 Carlos Burle visited our school. He visited us at the school court yard. We had an assembly for all of elementary. CarlosBurle is a famous surfer from Pernambuco who surfed with the Rio 2016 Olympic torch!! We were able to ask questions like, How did it feel to make Rio 2016 Olympic history? and When did you start surfing? We all got a chance to hold the Rio 2016 torch!!! It was very unique experience and was heavy ot hold up with one hand.  Carlos Burle came to share information with us and help us get ready and excited for the Olympics!

Connecting With Other Schools

The idea is to connected with other school to practice our English and learn about places around the world.  We have used skype for many different things. Our first skype meeting was with a school in Buenos Aires. We skyped with them to learn more about their weather. It was all a part of our global project Same Day in March.

Our second skype was early May with a school in Delaware, United States of America. We did a mystery skype with them! A mystery skype is when we don’t know where they are and we need to make yes or no questions to figure out where they are. Everyone had an important job to do!

Our third skype date was just last week! We skyped with a Maple Bear Elementary school in São Paulo. Their class was year 4 too!  We learnt so many cool things from them and about them. We learnt that we have more in common then we expected.

We have been skyping to learn about places around the world! We have learnt that one day in 2007 Buenos Aires had SNOW!!! They have much colder weather than us. We learnt that Delaware has different weather than us, they have hurricanes! The class in Delaware had already mystery skyped with over 70 classes and they have a blog too. We had to learn LOTS of geography terms to be able to ask our questions. Some of the words we learnt were: Northern hemisphere, Southern hemisphere, East, West, North, South ect.

We love it as we get to learn things we didn’t know before, practice our English with lots of new students and most of all it is awesome!!

Science Weather Infograph Posters

Hi everyone,

Today we are talking about weather infographs!!

Our inforgraphs are about weather. We all wrote about different countries and cities. Our infographs showed graphs of the temperature and other informations. We can use infographs to show a lot of information. For example some of the cities we learnt about were: New York, Los Angeles, Natal, Calgary, Milan, Dubai, Tokyo, Toronto, Montreal, Rome, Boston and Orlando.

We learnt very interesting weather facts about the cities. For example, some cities have hurricanes, tornadoes, snow and Chinook winds.

We made the posters at home and we presented in class.

Have you ever done an infograph?

Our camera died after our first presenter!

Skype Date with Buenos Aires

This post is a little late because I forgot to assign it to a blog group. So this is a special post from Mrs. Siqueira!

We connected with the class in Buenos Aires as a part of The Same Day in March project we did for science. We were able to ask many questions about the weather and share with them about our weather. We learnt that it snowed there in 2007! We had no idea! They were surprised to here how hot it is here all year round. It was a great first skype date and we look forward to many more!

That day we had to practice being flexible because when the moment came to call we had technical difficulties with our smart board and thats why we are all huddled around a laptop. We still had so much fun! We are going to keep working on taking turn and listening carefully so we can keep learning more from classrooms around the world.
