Grids and Coordinates: New Math Unit

On Tuesday of the last week of September or the 27th of September 2016 in Year 4 class at Maple Bear Barra we started a new math unit.

Our new unit is called Transformational Geometry in the Math Makes Sense textbook. This unit is very easy for us after working so hard in math all year.

  • Thiago, João Pedro and Francisco
Will you study transformational geometry in grade 4 too?

Special Project

We made this special project over the last few weeks. The Magic School Bus project was made in year 4 class. All the students of year 4 class worked hard on the MSB projects.

Each student chose a MSB chapter book. We each read our books over one week, some students finished early. On the project we had to put 15 booklets sharing information about the book topic.

We did the projects to learn about many different topics. We are also going to use the projects for a scavenger hunt with year 3.

Have you ever read a Magic School Bus book? Chapter book? Picture book? What did you like about it?

New Math Unit Interview

Mrs. Siqueira’s interview of Bruna about our new math unit:

1.) What is our new unit in math?

Our new unit is the multiplication unit.

2.) How did you feel when we started the new unit?

I felt afraid because I don’t know so much about multiplication.

3.) What do you remember from last year about multiplication?

x is the symbol for multiplication.

You need two numbers to make an equation.

If we skip count we get the multiples of a number. For example 3,6,9,12,15,18,21,24,27,30…

4.) What is the multiplication chart tell us?

It tells us all the multiples of a number and the answers of some questions.

5.) How do we use the multiplication chart?

First, you find the number on the top row , for example 7, then you find the number on the side column , for example 6, then you follow the row and column until the meet. 7×6=42

6.) Anything else you want to share about our new unit?

The unit is a little bit difficult. I am nervous to have the test so I will have to study a lot!

Thank you sharing Bruna!!

Graphing Math Games

In math games we played a game that had two groups of six cards. We needed to take one card from each group and add the two cards, then we recorded the answer in our DATA CHART.

We had another paper that we put the result of each match. To display the results we made a bar graph. After we needed to answer some questions about our graphs.

Most of the people in the class liked the game, some people couldn’t play the game because they didn’t finish their homework or all of the class work.

We practiced and learnt more about adding and graphing.

Have you ever played a math game? If you have never played check out our MATH LINKS or goggle some!

Good bye! See you next time!

Math Graphing

Hello guys,

Today we are going write about math graphing.

A few days ago we started drawing pictographs. Pictographs are very awesome! We made vertical and horizontal graphs.

We explored some graphs like circle graphs. Circle graphs can be called PIZZA GRAPHS!

Pictographs have keys and they help so we know the number of symbols and what they represent.

Math Games

Math games are games based on math skills we are learning. Every Friday we play math games. Math games help us practice important skills to get smarter.  This week we played ‘make the biggest number’ with cards. To play the game we used a place value chart and 9 playing cards from 1-9. We shuffled the card and placed them upside down. The first player picks a card and places it on the place value chart. The higher numbers should go in the thousands, then hundreds. The lower cards should go in the ones place value.

We enjoyed this game a lot! It helps us for assessments and work.
